SoFi Personal Loan Review: Look Beyond the Starting Rate

Updated .

A larger loan range is useful. A lower interest rate can be useful too. But the better offer is the one that delivers the cash you need at a repayment cost you can afford.

TL;DR / Our take

Worth comparing, not an automatic winner

SoFi deserves a closer look when you need at least $5,000 and want to weigh a no-fee option against a lower-interest-rate option with a fee. Our practical test is stricter: hold cash received and payoff time constant, then compare the total cost. In our illustration below, a 12% interest-rate loan with a deducted fee costs more than a 15% no-fee loan.

This is our interpretation of public disclosures and modeled scenarios, not a loan application test or a recommendation based on your finances. We have not borrowed from SoFi for this review.

What the official pages say

SoFi personal-loan rates, amounts and fees

Official-source snapshot checked October 28, 2026. These product parameters are not a personalized offer. Each source link identifies the disclosure behind that row.

Scope matters: the APR row describes one published no-fee example, not a universal rate for every repayment term or product. Official pages and campaigns can differ. Your lender disclosure controls; do not combine a promotional rate from one page with conditions from another.

Why we do not print a single minimum credit score

The official eligibility criteria checked for this review discuss credit and financial history rather than establishing one score that guarantees acceptance. We therefore do not publish a guessed cutoff. Use our fair-credit borrowing guide or bad-credit comparison guide to prepare questions, not to predict a lender decision. Eligibility source.

When should you consider SoFi, and when should you look elsewhere?

Reasons to put it on your shortlist

  • You need an amount within its published range, rather than a small loan below the minimum.
  • You want to compare fee structures and are willing to read the actual offer.
  • You have a defined payoff plan for eligible expenses, such as home repairs or debt consolidation.
  • You may repay early and want to check the payoff terms rather than assume you must keep the loan for its full term.

Reasons to pause or compare another route

  • You need only $1,000 or $2,000. Borrowing $5,000 to satisfy a minimum can create unnecessary debt.
  • Your budget already has a monthly shortfall. Replacing one bill with a new installment will not fix that shortfall by itself.
  • You need guaranteed cash today. Review time, bank availability and creditor posting are separate steps.
  • You need financing for a use the product excludes. Check the lender's use restrictions before providing application information.

These are our decision criteria, not a lender eligibility model. Compare the payment against your monthly budget before choosing a product.

What we count as a drawback

A high borrowing ceiling is not helpful for a small bill. A discounted rate is not helpful if its conditions do not suit you. And more term choices are not automatically better: a long payoff may reduce the monthly amount while increasing total payments. These tradeoffs matter more than giving every lender a nearly identical star score.

Original Credit N Lending calculation

Does a lower interest rate beat a no-fee loan?

Not necessarily. Here is a controlled comparison in which each scenario delivers $10,000 in usable cash. The fee scenario requires a larger principal because 5% is withheld at disbursement. We use hypothetical 12% and 15% annual interest rates, not observed SoFi offers.

Modeled inputs: $10,000 net cash; principal shown below; fixed 12% or 15% annual interest; 36 or 60 monthly payments; 0% or 5% deducted fee. Excludes late charges, optional products, missed payments and prepayments. Not a market average, lender quote or approval threshold.
ScenarioPrincipalFeeTermMonthly paymentTotal payments

$10,000.00$0.0036 months$346.65$12,479.52
Lower interest rate, 5% deducted fee
12% interest

No-fee illustration, longer term
15% interest
$10,000.00$0.0060 months$237.90$14,273.96

The result: the cheaper-looking rate loses this example

Over 36 months, the fee scenario repays about $106.96 more than the no-fee scenario, despite its lower interest rate. Stretching the no-fee 15% scenario to 60 months reduces the payment to about $237.90 but increases total payments by about $1,794.44 compared with its 36-month version.

Those are two different comparisons: the first isolates fee and interest-rate tradeoffs at the same cash received and term; the second shows the cost of extending repayment. Neither establishes what SoFi will offer you. For an actual offer, record the lender's disclosed APR, payment, amount financed and total of payments.

Calculation method and rounding

We use payment = P × r / (1 − (1 + r)−n), with r equal to annual interest divided by 12. Fee-case principal is $10,000 / 0.95; the unrounded balance is used for the calculation. Total payments use unrounded monthly payments; currency is displayed to two decimals. The fee-case 12% is an interest input, not its fee-inclusive APR. Daily accrual, real disbursement dates and lender rounding can change actual payments.

Reproduce variations with the personal-loan payment calculator, net-proceeds calculator and fee index. The CFPB recommends checking the loan disclosures for charges; these scenarios are our own calculations.

What should you check before relying on a rate discount?

SoFi's autopay guidance describes a 0.25-percentage-point interest-rate reduction that is lost if autopay is turned off. Its published rate examples also apply a member discount. These are conditions attached to a price, not cash savings you should assume in advance. Autopay source; rate-example source.

  1. Ask which discounts are already included in the displayed rate.
  2. Write down what you must do to receive and maintain each one.
  3. Check the payment if a discount ends, including any account or subscription cost you would incur solely to qualify.
  4. Compare the final disclosed cost with a no-discount alternative using the same amount and payoff time.

Our checklist is not a statement that any particular discount will be available to you.

When does SoFi check your credit, and what happens next?

Rate check is not final approval

SoFi describes a soft inquiry for the initial rate check and a hard inquiry when you select an option and continue. Read the consent screen at that transition. A preliminary result is not a reason to take on another financial commitment before verification finishes. Application source.

Before rate shopping, check your credit reports and keep income and existing-debt information accurate. Do not change numbers to fit what you think a lender wants to see.

Questions to have ready

  • What documents are required for my income situation?
  • At what point will I authorize a hard inquiry?
  • Is the displayed payment final or subject to verification?
  • What happens if my verified information changes the offer?

Use our prequalification guide and credit-effects article for the broader distinctions.

What changes with a co-borrower?

SoFi's joint-application guidance says both borrowers share responsibility for repayment. Think of that as shared debt, not just a stronger application. Agree on who makes payments and how you will handle a missed paycheck. Co-borrower source.

SoFi Direct Pay: a signed consolidation loan is not a paid-off card

Direct Pay can send funds to eligible credit cards and personal-loan creditors. SoFi says the creditor can take up to 10 business days to apply the payment. Mortgages, auto loans and student loans are not covered by that feature in the checked guidance. Direct Pay source.

A timing example

Suppose your card payment is due Friday and you sign a consolidation agreement on Wednesday. Do not cancel Friday's required payment simply because the new loan is signed. Check the creditor account, keep required payments current and reconcile the final balance when the transfer posts. This is a hypothetical workflow, not a prediction of SoFi's processing time.

Account funding has its own timeline: SoFi's support guidance describes funds generally becoming available within a few business days after signature, with weekends, holidays and bank processing affecting access. Confirm where the funds are going and when they become usable. Funding source.

Before consolidating, compare the new total cost with the debt-consolidation calculator and the fee break-even research. A new loan does not erase debt or prevent new card spending.

What about early payoff and missed payments?

SoFi states that personal loans accrue daily interest and have no prepayment penalty. If early payoff is likely, compare the planned payoff date as well as the scheduled lifetime cost. An upfront fee can matter more when you keep a loan only briefly. Get the lender's dated payoff figure before sending a final payment. Interest and payoff source.

A stated absence of late fees does not make missed payments harmless: interest can continue and delinquency can have consequences under the agreement. Protect your payment budget rather than treating any fee policy as permission to pay late. Our debt-to-income guide helps organize the monthly commitments you already have.

What should you compare with a SoFi personal loan?

Another direct-lender offer

Our SoFi versus Discover comparison focuses on differences between two products. This review instead examines SoFi's decision points in depth. Recheck the source dates on either page before choosing.

A different borrowing structure

A short payoff may call for a different comparison than a multi-year installment loan. Read loan versus balance transfer or personal loan versus HELOC, including the fees and collateral risks.

No new loan

If the payment is unaffordable, ask the creditor about available arrangements before adding new debt. A credit-counseling conversation can help you examine a repayment budget. See loan versus debt management plan.

A separate marketplace check

Credit N Lending lets you request $100 to $50,000. Our advertised marketplace APR range is 6.99% to 35.99% for eligible applicants. A partner response, matching lender or multiple offers is not guaranteed. These are not SoFi terms. Compare marketplace approaches.

SoFi personal-loan questions, answered

Short answers to the cost, eligibility and application questions this review addresses. Follow the source links below for lender-controlled terms.

Is SoFi a legitimate personal-loan option?

SoFi publishes personal-loan terms and eligibility information on its official website. Verify the legal lender named in your agreement and use official contact channels. A recognizable brand does not guarantee approval, the lowest rate or suitability for your budget.

How much can I borrow with a SoFi personal loan?

SoFi advertises $5,000 to $100,000, with possible higher minimums in some states. The lender decides your actual amount after evaluating the application. Do not borrow more simply to reach a product minimum.

What APR does SoFi advertise?

The checked rate table shows 6.99% to 35.49% for its 24-month, no-origination-fee example with conditional discounts. Other terms and personalized offers can differ. This is not Credit N Lending's marketplace APR range.

Does SoFi charge an origination fee?

Its Help Center describes no-fee options and an optional one-time fee in exchange for a lower interest rate. Compare net proceeds, disclosed APR and total repayment rather than assuming that the lower interest rate is the cheaper loan.

Does checking a SoFi rate hurt my credit score?

SoFi says the initial rate check uses a soft inquiry. If you choose a loan option and continue, it can obtain a full credit report through a hard inquiry, which may affect your score. Read the authorization before continuing.

What credit score is required for a SoFi personal loan?

We did not verify a universal numeric minimum in the official eligibility material checked for this review. Credit history, income, expenses and other underwriting factors matter. We do not assign an approval threshold or an APR to a score band.

Does SoFi offer a 10-year personal loan?

The Help Center lists a 10-year choice alongside shorter terms, while the published rate-example table covers 2 to 7 years. Confirm availability, APR and total repayment in your actual offer; do not assume every applicant can select every term.

How long does SoFi take to fund a personal loan?

Its funding guidance describes funds generally becoming available within a few business days after signature, with timing affected by processing and holidays. That is not a guarantee. Ask separately about application review, bank availability and creditor-payment posting.

Should I keep making card payments after choosing Direct Pay?

Yes, keep required payments current until your creditor confirms the payment has posted. SoFi says Direct Pay can take up to 10 business days to be applied by the creditor. Check each account rather than assuming a signed loan paid it off immediately.

Can I apply with a co-borrower?

SoFi describes joint applications with a co-borrower. Both borrowers share repayment responsibility; an additional applicant is not a guarantee of approval or a better price. Discuss payment responsibilities before applying together.

Can I pay a SoFi personal loan off early?

SoFi states that personal loans have no prepayment penalty and use daily interest. Request an actual payoff amount for your intended payoff date instead of treating an amortization illustration as a payoff quote.

Does this review mean SoFi is in Credit N Lending's network?

No. Reviewing SoFi does not establish a partner relationship. The Credit N Lending buttons lead to our own marketplace application, not a SoFi application, and do not guarantee a match with SoFi or any lender.

How we assessed SoFi

We checked lender-owned product, eligibility and support disclosures for this review. We evaluated amount fit, fee choices, rate-check stage, repayment flexibility and funding or creditor-posting limitations. We then built original cost illustrations with stated assumptions. We did not submit an application, obtain a personalized quote, borrow money, test customer support, measure approval odds or calculate a customer-satisfaction rating.

The published rate table and the Help Center do not describe identical term menus; we show that difference rather than silently assuming either is available to everyone. Some promotional pages also show different rate floors. The APR fact row deliberately identifies the specific no-fee rate-table example used. We did not validate availability for every state or applicant.
